Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon: if you push far enough east, icebergs are floating around in this calm water; it looks fake. Days 4 to 5 - East Fjords
This is the part people skip or rush through, and honestly, that's a shame because it's probably my favourite section of the whole Iceland Ring Road trip. No crowds. Small fishing villages. Roads that wind around every single fjord instead of cutting through, which means it takes longer than the map suggests, but also means the views are constant. Seydisfjordur is worth a detour - the blue church and the rainbow-painted road leading to it are kind of surreal. Egilsstadir works as a base for the area.
Days 6 and 7 - North Iceland
Myvatn. That's the main thing up here. Volcanic craters, boiling mud pots, the Myvatn Nature Baths - cheaper than the Blue Lagoon and, honestly, I think better: fewer people, same general idea. Dettifoss waterfall is close by, Europe's most powerful waterfall, so loud you feel it in your chest before you see it. Husavik is the whale watching capital of Iceland, worth a half-day detour. Godafoss sits right on the Ring Road - a waterfall of the gods; you basically just stop the car.
Days 8 and 9 - Snaefellsnes Peninsula
Technically not on the Ring Road. Go anyway. The Snaefellsjokull glacier sits on top of a volcano at the far western tip of the peninsula. Jules Verne used it as the entrance to the centre of the Earth in his 1864 novel. The whole peninsula has a different quality of light from the rest of Iceland - lava fields, sea cliffs, and small fishing villages. Worth two days easily.
Day 10 - Back to Reykjavik
And that's the Iceland Ring Road itinerary for 2026 done. Sort of. You haven't done the Westfjords, which is a whole separate region that could take another four or five days. You probably skipped some East Fjords villages. That's fine. Iceland doesn't really fit into any itinerary cleanly - that's part of the point.
